    What's behind the design?

Until this day, the Avalon Ballroom is considered as a major venue of the Haight-Ashbury rock and hippie counterculture scene in San Francisco between April 1966 and November 1968. One funny thing about this venue is that it was run by a group of hippies named "The Familly Dog" who was originally found for the purpose of organizing concerts.

That's where, in 1966, Janis Joplin performed her first gig with Big Brother and the Holding Company. Talking about them, did you guys know that "Combination of the Two" (which is the opening track of Cheap Thrills) is an homage to the rock venue of the time in San Francisco and one of the two is the Avalon Ballroom!

The venue has also hosted legendary bands & artists such as Bo Diddley, The Doors, Grateful Dead, 13th Floor Elevators, Steve Miller, or even Jefferson Airplane. By the way, we've put together our favorite tracks recorded there in a playlist available here.

Another inevitable component of the main venue of the sixties counterculture was the graphic design realized to market the shows. Each venue had its own graphic designers. At the Avalon, they were mainly realized by two amazing artists: Stanley "Mouse" Miller and Alton Kelly. We've gathered for you some of our favorites posters on a moodboard! On the other hand, the light shows were handled by a band called Diogenes Lantern Works.
